Child Marriage Awareness Program Conducted at Mount Carmel School, Kadaganchi

A Child Marriage Awareness Program was held on 25th July 2025 at Mount Carmel School, Kadaganchi, under the guidance of Fr. William Miranda OCD, Secretary of Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust. The session aimed to educate students about the harmful practice of child marriage—its causes, consequences, and the need for collective action to prevent it.

Fr. William Miranda led the session with an insightful presentation, explaining that child marriage refers to any marriage where the boy or girl is under the legal age — 18 for girls and 21 for boys. He stressed that child marriage is a violation of children’s rights, often resulting in the loss of education, health, freedom, and future opportunities.

Fr. Miranda highlighted several root causes that contribute to child marriage in rural and underdeveloped areas:

  • Poverty and economic pressure on families

  • Lack of education and awareness

  • Traditional customs and social norms

  • Dowry concerns and safety fears regarding girls

He also discussed the serious consequences of early marriage, which include:

  • Discontinuation of education, especially for girls

  • Early pregnancies leading to health risks and maternal deaths

  • Increased risk of domestic violence and psychological trauma

  • Denial of childhood and personal growth opportunities

Fr. William urged the students to become ambassadors of change, saying:

“Each one of us has a role to play. Speak up. Inform your teachers, parents, or authorities if you come to know of any child marriage being planned. Silence supports injustice.

The program concluded with students taking a pledge to stand against child marriage, promote education, and uphold the rights and dignity of every child in their community.

This initiative reflects Carmel Jyothi Trust’s commitment to building a just and informed society by empowering the younger generation through awareness, advocacy, and action.
