9-Day Rural Exposure Training for Theology Students at Carmel Hill, Mangalore

A unique 9-day social exposure training program was recently held for the theology students of Carmel Hill, Mangalore, aimed at deepening their understanding of rural life and strengthening their pastoral sensitivity. The program was organized by Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable Trust, Kadaganchi, as part of the students’ ongoing spiritual and human formation.

This initiative offered the students an immersive experience in rural communities, enabling them to witness firsthand the daily struggles and resilience of the poor. Through direct village engagement and personal interactions, the students explored pressing social issues such as poverty, lack of access to education, unemployment, inadequate healthcare, child marriage, and social exclusion.

They had the opportunity to engage deeply with farmers, women, youth, and community leaders, gaining invaluable insights into their lives, challenges, and aspirations. These interactions were followed by group reflections, guided by Gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching, encouraging the students to connect real-life experiences with their theological learning.

The exposure not only enriched their academic and spiritual journey but also nurtured empathy, compassion, and a service-oriented mindset. This training is an essential step in preparing future pastors who are committed to walking with the people, especially the poor and marginalized, with understanding and love.

The Carmel Jyothi Trust remains committed to forming future Church leaders who are grounded in the reality of the people they are called to serve.
